Résumé

In these gripping accounts of true cases, bestselling author Atul Gawande performs exploratory surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science not in its idealised form, but as it actually is - complicated, perplexing and profoundly human. Dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors explore how deadly mistakes occur, what happens when medicine comes up against the inexplicable and what it feels like to insert your knife into someone.
Atul Gawande is a resident in surgery in Boston and a staff writer on medicine and science for The New Yorker. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School as well as an M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health. His writing has appeared in The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2000 and the New Yorker essay collection In Sickness and In Health. Gawande lives with his wife and three children in Newton, Massachusetts.
