L. Sandy MAISEL is the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Government at Colby College. He was the founding director (2003-2012) of Colby's Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement. A former candidate for Congress, he is author or editor of twenty books on political parties and elections and is a frequent commentator on contemporary politics.
