Résumé
"The Odyssey of Homer, " translated by William Cowper, is an epic poem that follows the journey of Telemachus, the son of Ulysses, as he seeks information about his long-absent father. The narrative begins with Telemachus, who is troubled by the suitors that have overrun his home in Ithaca, consuming his inheritance and vying for his mother Penelope's hand in marriage. Encouraged by the goddess Minerva, who appears in disguise, Telemachus calls an assembly to address the suitors and announces his intention to search for news of Ulysses.
Despite the suitors' mockery and resistance, Telemachus is determined to embark on his quest. Minerva assists him by securing a ship and crew, and they set sail for Pylus to seek counsel from Nestor, an old friend of Ulysses. Nestor recounts the events following the fall of Troy but has no news of Ulysses. He advises Telemachus to visit Menelaus in Sparta for further information. The narrative highlights themes of perseverance, the search for identity, and the influence of the divine in human affairs.
Throughout the journey, Telemachus matures, gaining confidence and wisdom, while the presence of the gods underscores the epic's exploration of fate and free will.
