Douarnenez est le berceau du renouveau de la voile traditionnelle en France, grâce à la restauration de bateaux de pêche à voile. Ce mouvement prend dès 1984 avec les fêtes de Pors Beac'h, suivi de Douarnenez 86, avant de culminer en 1988 avec la fête maritime de DZ88. Ce succès est porté par l'oeuvre de Bernard Cadoret et la revue Le Chasse-Marée, qui valorisent le patrimoine maritime. Douarnenez devient alors un lieu de rassemblement où l'on célèbre tous les deux ans la beauté des voiliers traditionnels.
Douarnenez is the birthplace of the revival of traditional sailing in France, thanks to the restoration of fishing boats with sails. This movement began in 1984 with the Fêtes de Pors Beac'h, followed by Douarnenez 86, and reached its peak in 1988 with maritime festival of DZ88. This success is driven by the work of Bernard Cadoret and the magazine Le Chasse-Marée, which highlight the maritime héritage.
Douarnenez then became a gathering place where, every two years, the beauty of traditional sailing vessels is celebrated.
