Romanesque, talentueuse et vive d’esprit, Emma est un personnage Austennien à part dans l’oeuvre de son auteur. Intellectuelle avant d’être émotive, elle aime l’intrigue et s’emploie à créer d’heureuses unions et à déjouer les pièges dans lesquelles les convenances et la naissance enferment les protagonistes de l’histoire.
Héroïne vaniteuse et sûre d’elle, elle se méprend cependant sur nombre de points et apprend de ses erreurs le pardon et l’humilité.
En ce sens, Emma est un roman initiatique dans lequel l’héroïne, parfois antipathique, n’en reste pas mois fantasque, complexe et nuancée.
Un personnage finement travaillé grâce à une écriture sûre et critique, qui évolue dans la bonne société anglaise du XVIII ème siècle, entre complots et manigances.
Un roman dense, qui n’évite pas quelques longueurs et une intrigue parfois multiple et tortueuse. Les personnages secondaires apparaissent quant à eux comme un prétexte pour mettre en avant le caractère d’Emma et ses nombreuses manies. Un roman intéressant pour la complexité qui caractérise joliment son personnage principal et pour la critique de la bonne société anglaise du XVIII ème siècle, mais qui pèche par son intrigue inégale et ses personnages secondaires qui auraient mérités plus d’épaisseur.
Une oeuvre que je ne regrette cependant pas d’avoir lue et qui complète à merveille mes précédentes découvertes de l’auteur.
