Résumé

Zoë is the fictional daughter of Alexander the Great and his wife Roxanna, born in the capital of Bactra Balkhi while her father was away invading India. Though initially overlooked by her mother for being a girl, Zoë is a precocious and highly intelligent child who receives a rigorous Greek education and is trained in the "tools of power, " specifically the use of herbalism and poisons. Roxannas elevation to queen creates political friction with her father Oxyartes, the governor of Bactria under the Persians, which breaks out into open war after a series of assassination attempts against the young Zoë.
Roxanna sends Zoë to the Macedonian capital of Pella to protect her, thus introducing her to her paternal grandmother, the formidable Olympias. Accompanied by her two loyal Bactrian guards, Konto and Cynos, Zoë enters a world of intense court intrigue where Olympias is engaged in a deadly power struggle with General Antipater and his son Cassander. The stakes escalate when news arrives that Alexander the Great has died, triggering a civil war as his generals begin carving up the empire for themselves.
Zoë becomes a key asset to her grandmother, serving as a spy and a priestess candidate of Apollo while surviving further attempts on her life. As Cassander's forces invade Macedonia, Zoë takes an active role in the defense of the state, eventually being named a naval operations officer at the border fortress of Pydna. She uses her knowledge of pharmacology and chemistry to design devastating fire ships that annihilate Cassander's fleet in a massive magnesium-fueled explosion.
However, the fortress is eventually starved into surrender, and Zoë is forced to watch from a distance as Olympias is executed by stoning. Following the fall of Pydna, Zoë and her guards escape through a secret tunnel and flee south, eventually becoming stranded after a shipwreck. They are rescued by a pirate ship, the Belerophon, where Zoë earns the respect of the crew by deciphering a cryptic treasure map and using an antidote to save the First Mate from a rival's poison.
Choosing a life of freedom over the dangerous role of an imperial pawn, Zoë joins the pirate crew and sets sail for Egypt to seek a new life amidst the ruins of her father's empire.
