About the AuthorThom Kolton was born and raised in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with a degree in French literature. He later moved to New York City, where he worked in the travel and computer industries, before settling in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1988, he first visited his ancestral village of Osturna, the westernmost Rusyn village in Europe, located in northeastern Slovakia and shaped by Lemko and Goral influences.
He returned in 1999, when he came to recognize his Rusyn identity, a recognition that would shape the rest of his life. In 2011, he purchased the log cabin in which his grandmother was born and has lived there ever since. The Golden Apple is his first book.
