Résumé

The Zizka Family in Tennessee is a historical family memoir documenting the Zizka family's immigration from Czechoslovakia to the United States in 1903 and their settlement in Appalachia. Covering life from Ohio and West Virginia to finally Tennessee, the book highlights their work in coal mining, farming, and small-scale entrepreneurship. It preserves the legacy of a resilient immigrant family who built a life through hard work, community contribution, and determination.
It includes personal recollections, historical context, and photographs from my mother's photo album, Zdenka Helen Zizka Lockwood.
Famey Lanora Lockwood, daughter of Zdenka Zizka Lockwood and Elisha Leason Lockwood, was born and raised in rural Tennessee. She continued her journey at the University of Alabama School of Nursing, later serving in the United States Air Force, and eventually building her career at Grady Hospital and Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, where she made her home for many years. She now resides in Virginia, where she devotes much of her time to mentoring and advising younger nurses and health information professionals.
Throughout her life, she has remained closely connected to both the Zizka and Lockwood families. As one of the few remaining members of her generation, she shares this Zizka Family History to honor those who worked diligently to create a better life for the generations that followed.
