A  playful girl named Zainabu makes fun of a strange tree with a belly-button-shaped hole in its trunk. But when the magical Gawo-tree suddenly comes alive and chases her through the forest, Zainabu discovers that careless words can lead to unexpected danger. Desperate for help, she meets a mysterious lizard weaving cloth in a forest clearing. The clever lizard agrees to save her-but only if she promises to marry him.
Using wit and magic, the lizard defeats the furious Gawo-tree and rescues Zainabu from harm. But instead of showing gratitude, Zainabu refuses to thank her rescuer and mocks the idea of marrying a lizard. Her kind and respectful stepsister, Amina, makes a very different choice-and soon discovers that the strange lizard is actually a prince in disguise.
