Résumé

In the tradition of countercultural storytelling, this gritty quasi-fictional travel memoir is a brutally honest dive into the expat underworld. Charlie Birch is a 40-year-old American washout fleeing a dead-end life in San Francisco for capricious explorations in Asia. Landing a strange job in Taiwan and mainland China, he quickly descends into the boozy, sex-and-drugs-fueled fringes of expat society.
One part dark-humor melodrama, one part unapologetic travelogue, Year of the Rat chronicles misadventures, blurred professional lines, and a chaotic search for meaning. The first book of Adams' Lunar New Years series offers a no-holds-barred look at life on the edge and the universal journey of reinvention. Read the new wave of transgressive literary fiction, carrying the torch of Hunter S. Thompson and Charles Bukowski.
Approx. 222 pages.
Christian Adams is an American author, musician, and editor whose work explores the grit and dark humor of the expatriate experience. Born in Chicago and shaped by a decade-long music career in the indie rock scenes of Chicago and San Francisco, Adams eventually traded the stage for the life of a global nomad, spending over 17 years across Taipei, China, and Southeast Asia. His literary debut, The Lazy Bastard Guide to Mandarin (2012), signaled a move toward a sharp, irreverent style of non-fiction.
His most ambitious project to date is the four-book memoir series, Lunar New Years. Blending the raw, unfiltered observations of gonzo literature with existential reflection, the series follows the chaotic journey of Charlie Birch through the cultural underworlds of modern Asia. When not writing books, Adams serves as the primary voice behind Black Sunshine Media, a platform dedicated to rock journalism and the celebration of unsung artists.
He currently lives and writes in Metro Manila, Philippines.
