Résumé

When Things Go Wrong: A Homeowner's Guide to Solving Problems Before They Become Disasters, helps homeowners recognize, address, and manage construction problems before they grow into major disputes. The book begins by teaching readers how to separate normal construction frustrations from genuine warning signs. It explains how to recognize patterns such as poor communication, repeated delays, declining workmanship, unexplained changes, and promises that are not being kept.
From there, it shows homeowners how to raise concerns early and professionally. The emphasis is on asking questions before making accusations, documenting important details, choosing the right time to talk, and giving the contractor a reasonable opportunity to correct legitimate problems. When communication no longer solves the issue, the book explains how to escalate carefully. Readers learn to return to the written agreement, organize documentation, seek qualified independent opinions, understand payment and workmanship disputes, and consider mediation or other formal resolution methods.
The final chapter addresses the most serious situations, including when the homeowner-contractor relationship may no longer be workable. It covers protecting the job site, reviewing termination provisions, organizing financial records, understanding when outside professional help may be necessary, and deciding when it may be better to end the relationship and bring in another contractor. The central message throughout the book is simple: most construction problems are easier to solve when they are recognized early, communicated clearly, and handled calmly.
The goal is not to teach homeowners how to fight contractors. It is to help them protect their home, their investment, and their peace of mind while staying focused on the real objective-finishing the project successfully.
With over 36 years in the construction industry and as a U. S. Navy veteran, Darren "SALT" Kesler has built his pool company on discipline, integrity, and communication. He created The Homeowner Education Series to give homeowners the practical information they need before the salesperson arrives and before they sign a contract.
