Résumé

What We Almost Lost is a deeply intimate portrait of a marriage tested by the slow erosion of presence rather than any single dramatic betrayal. Tom and Sandra Gordon - a driven financial consultant and a quietly brilliant former English major turned devoted mother - have built a full, functional life together in the suburbs, complete with two spirited children, a loyal neighbor in Maggie, and all the outward markers of success.
But beneath the school runs and business trips and late-night functional exchanges, something essential has been quietly thinning. When Sandra has an unexpected mall encounter with a college flame named Michael, and Tom's glamorous new deputy Camille Seymore arrives at the office with a presence that stirs something he cannot immediately name, both husband and wife are nudged - gently but unmistakably - toward a reckoning with how far they have drifted from the versions of themselves who once found lemon-ginger soda on a doorstep and called it love.
Tom and Sandra discover that the greatest threat to a marriage is not passion directed elsewhere, but the slow, unannounced departure from each other's daily attention - and that choosing each other, clearly and daily, is the only thing that has ever been required.
