Résumé
One week was never going to be enough. They both knew it the moment the rain stopped and the road began to dry. The cabin still held the heat of everything they had done inside it. The sheets still carried the scent of skin and woodsmoke. The fire still burned every night, lower now, no longer fighting for survival. Outside, the mountain had returned to its ordinary sounds-water dripping from branches, birds reclaiming the air, the distant rush of a creek that had finally remembered its banks.
Inside, two people moved carefully around the agreement they had made, testing its edges without yet breaking them. Lena had opened the letter. She had not yet opened the lockbox. Calder had agreed to stay. He had not yet told her the full shape of the debt that still followed him. The week stretched between them like thin ice. Every morning they woke tangled in the same bed. Every afternoon they found reasons to touch-hands brushing at the sink, mouths meeting in the hallway, bodies answering each other in the dark with a hunger that refused to quiet.
Every evening the silence grew heavier with the things they still had not said. On the sixth day, a truck that did not belong to either of them turned onto the spur road and began the slow climb toward the cabin. Some fires are put out by rain. Others wait for the weather to clear, then burn everything the storm left standing. This is the story of what happened when the quiet finally broke.
