Résumé
Not so long ago, Welkin gave up his life on the road, selling his proverbial sword to the highest bidder. However, that life had not given up on him. Now he finds himself embroiled in a war, his skills as a battle mage again put to the test. Beneath the besieged fortress of Brecht lies a secret buried for millennia. Welkin's former comrades, the pyromancer Ingman and the necromancer Delora, are determined to uncover that secret and seize its power for their own.
Welkin, unable to resist the pull exerted by this discovery, finds himself drawn into a conflict between two noble houses and their centuries old feud. Guided by a murderous child known only as the Waif, the three magi have inserted themselves into the effort to lift the siege and thereby gain access to the fortress. In order to do so, Welkin will have to force down his own misgivings and go once more into the breach.
