I write the way most people think - at midnight, mid-thought, chasing whatever idea won't let go until it's been put into words. I don't believe in writing only when inspiration feels poetic. Most of my best ideas show up while I'm doing something completely ordinary, and I've learned to just let them in, whatever shape they take. That's the whole reason I write - not for a finished plan, just to follow wherever my head decides to go.
