Wasteland. War of the Magi, #1

In the ancient world, man was the ruler of all he beheld.  His technology had allowed him to reach new heights of human dominance and progression.  But then came the Wasting, when a blast of pure energy struck down from the sky and the earth was blackened by the dark clouds that eventually covered the surface of the world.  All life was nearly lost, and the few remaining human survivors scratched out a bare existence in small colonies as they struggled against the now deadly world around them.
But then came the time when some of them realized they had been changed by the strange force that had so radically altered their world.  They could see into the fabric of reality itself, allowing them to make changes as they saw fit.  It began in the most basic forms, calling forth the elements and moving things with their minds, but it eventually grew into the arts of healing and modifications of items that they called enchantments.
 These people formed a new society, which they called the Order of the Magi, and they set their will upon the world around them, making things better for themselves and the rest of humanity that had come to rely upon them.  A great city was built and they formed their headquarters there, watching over the people of the Waste and protecting them from the new monsters that had emerged from the energies that had laid the world waste.
But then came rumors of a new enemy, a strange army from across the sea, which seemed intent on enslavement and destruction.  And along with this new enemy would come the secrets of the hidden past, and eventually a revelation of the world as something quite different than any of them had ever believed possible.
