In 1835, after British policies and personal loss strip Magdalena van Rensburg of security, she gathers her children and joins the Great Trek. She survives the massacre at Weenen, stands inside the laager at Blood River, and later relocates to the Highveld to escape British rule in Natal. There she builds a farm, forges a cautious alliance with a Sotho headman, and finds a second chance at love with a widower who shares her losses.
Across four decades she raises a family, defends her boundaries, and watches her eldest son drawn to the diamond fields where old rules no longer apply. When land commissions and new settlers threaten what she has built, Lena must decide what independence truly costs and what her children will inherit.
