Résumé
My sister went into the tunnel under Wickham Hill.
She never came out.
The night of the Harvest Lantern Festival, Lily made me promise.
If she wasn't back by midnight, I'd tell Mom and Dad.
Not before.
I was twelve. She was seventeen and stubborn and sure that being brave meant not being scared.
She had a yellowed map, a silver locket, and a secret from our grandmother's old letter.
"There's a door down there, " she told me.
"A silver door." She thought it could prove the tunnel was once part of the Underground Railroad. She thought it could prove old Mr. Pendleton wrong about the family he didn't want anyone to know about. I watched her disappear under the black oak. Then I went back to the pumpkin display and waited. Midnight came. The lanterns went dark. She didn't come back. They found her backpack fifty feet in.
The flashlight still worked. They did not find Lily. After three days, the town sealed the grate, chained it shut, and called it a safety hazard. Everyone wanted to forget. I couldn't. Because Mrs. Hargrave, the old librarian who smells of lavender and dusty paper, leaned on her cane and whispered something to the police chief that made his face turn from doubt to fear. And the tunnel? It still smells of wet stone and burnt sugar. It's still down there, under the hill, holding its oldest secret. Now Maddie has to do the thing she was too afraid to do that night. She has to go down into the dark. Past the well of whispers.
Past the three locked doors. All the way to the silver chamber. Because some promises can't be kept from the safe side of the grate. Underneath Wickham Hill is a heartwarming, gently spooky middle-grade adventure about a brave little sister, a vanished girl, a hidden tunnel, buried history, an unlikely friendship, and the courage it takes to follow someone you love into the dark. Perfect for readers who love underground mysteries, brave kid heroes, secret-history adventures, sibling bonds, and a hopeful ending that lights the way home.
A standalone middle-grade adventure for ages 8 to 12.
