Résumé

Under the Golden Melaleuca Tree presents a satirical look at the Australian way of life, starting from the pending Japanese invasion of New Guinea, through post war, right up to present day, seen through the eyes of my paternal uncle. This is a true story full of satire, love, heartbreak, grief, death, and triumph. Our story commences one mid summers' morning when my paternal uncle Kevin arrives unexpectedly on our doorstep.
He informs my wife and I that he has a penchant for travelling, was in our neighbourhood, so has called in to see us along his way. He requests to stay for a short time, but stays for a long while. We didn't know at the time that my uncle was carrying with him a secret. The central character is my uncle Kevin, the youngest son of ten siblings. We follow Kevie, from his early childhood, living with family at Rutherford, through his roaming days around Queensland, to present day.
Illiterate for a good part of his life, Kevie turns his life around to become a responsible and respected union representative, and then later in life, a successful businessman. He is a self made man. During his life time, Kevie has introduced on behalf of his union the likes of Nelson Mandela, Joh Biejlke-Peterson, and the Whitlam's. Kevie's secret unfolds towards the end of his tenure with us. Redemption is not possible.
