After the city of Darwin is bombed by the Japanese, nurse Meg Dorset escapes south in a truck filled with injured soldiers. Along the way, she meets the charming Seamus Flanagan and, at the army camp at Adelaide River, they fall in love and become engaged. When Seamus ships out to join the war in the north, Meg is transferred to the RAAF hospital in Townsville where she realises she is pregnant to her new fiancé.
