Résumé

The symbol of the Ottoman capital, Constantinople, was the Galata Tower, and the symbol of the empire's second city, Salonika, which became Greece's second city after independence, was the White Tower. These two towers have witnessed many events during their centuries-long history, including two devastating world wars: World War I and World War II. These wars, in addition to causing enormous casualties due to active operations on the battlefields, also caused death and suffering to those in the rear. The novel tells the story of what happened around these towers during those wars, which the main character of the novel also witnessed.
Among the victims of those wars were his relatives, acquaintances, and familiar intellectuals. However, the main character did not passively witness the events but also took part in them. The blows of fate did not depress him; despite the difficulties he constantly encountered, he struggled to overcome them without losing hope. At the same time, he tried to understand why people were so unjust, cruel, or indifferent to each other. The novel contains themes of selfless, honest friendship, caring attitude, and beautiful and romantic love.
