Twelve Coin Darts (?????)The title derives from protagonist Yu Jianping's signature hidden weapon: twelve plain copper coins he flings with unmatched precision, a symbol of quiet, unflashy chivalry rather than ostentatious power. Penned by Gong Baiyu (???), the founding master of realist wuxia, this landmark novel was first serialized in 1938. Born in 1899 and deceased in 1966, Gong abandoned early literary research amid turbulent times and turned to wuxia novels to make a living.
His iconic works include Swordsman of the Wilderness, Arrow of the Lonely Frontier and this career-defining Twelve Coin Darts. Breaking the fantasy tropes of old martial tales, Gong crafts flawed, ordinary warriors instead of omnipotent heroes. Retired top escort Yu Jianping once ran the renowned Anping Escort Bureau. He retreats to a mountain hamlet to live peacefully, yet old sworn brother Hu Menggang begs to borrow his famous dart banner to guard 200, 000 taels of imperial silver tax.
Yu sends his eldest disciple Black Hawk Cheng Yue to assist, only for the caravan to be ambushed by Flying Leopard's gang on Fan's Causeway. The bandits steal all silver and seize the dart banner, issuing a personal challenge to Yu over a decades-old martial arts grudge. Every figure-timid petty thief Qiao Mao, injured veteran escorts, hot young fighters-carries human weaknesses, with most endings steeped in helpless sorrow rather than triumphant victory.
Its lasting influence lies in Gong's groundbreaking realistic style: he grounds jianghu conflicts in real life, writes sharp, restrained satire about fame and loyalty, and portrays chivalry's bitter costs instead of glorifying heroism. This volume is the world's first complete unabridged English translation of the novel.
