American Margaret Richardson dreams of a little girl who speaks a language she cannot understand. Margaret finds secreted documents that might explain her persistent and unsettling dreams, but her father offers her meager and halting explanations. She searches, first in Holland   and then in Germany to uncover the truth, no matter how painful, and for the mother she never knew. Dutch General Pieter Van Leeuvan meets Margaret in Rotterdam and they are immediately attracted and intrigued by one another.  He wants to help Margaret because of her story and his ever growing desire for her.
Pieter introduces Margaret to a well-known couple in West German politics. The couple knew Margaret's mother during the war and when they see her, they are awestruck, for Margaret could be her mother's twin.  Has she come to seek revenge?  Margaret saw them murder  her grandmother in 1945, but that memory is deep in her subconscious.  In a serious game of cat and mouse, there are attempts made on Margaret's life.
Will they succeed or can Margaret find love among the emotional ruins of her life?
