Douglas Hurd is a former Minister for Northern Ireland and Foreign Secretary in Margaret Thatcher's Government. He was also Political Secretary to Edward Heath when he was Prime Minister (1970-74), becoming Lord Hurd of Westwell in the 1997 honours lists.

Résumé
Somewhere in the Indian ocean a coup d'etat threatens a country to which Britain has treaty obligations. The Foreign Secretary has been killed in an aircrash: rather than remodel his government on the eve of an election the Prime Minister has promoted a senior and much respected backbencher.
