It also explores the history of the Protestant rebellion in the Cévennes and the coexistence of Catholics and Protestants in the region.
The book was dedicated to Stevenson's friend Sidney Colvin. The route Stevenson took has since become popular among hikers, and there have been various adaptations of the book in films and theater.
