Giovanni Segantini war im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert einer der bekanntesten Maler des Symbolismus. Seine existentiellen Themen und Bildvorstellungen ermöglichten ihm, sich in seinem Werk mit seinen traumatischen Todeserfahrungen auseinanderzusetzen. Diese lebenslange, unbewusste Motivationskraft wird anhand von über 60 Gemälden nachgezeichnet. Durch eine Kombination von kulturhistorischer Recherche und psychoanalytischer Interpretation wird ein Seelenleben in Bildern sichtbar: Dort ist zu sehen, wie von außen hereinbrechende Todeserfahrungen eine mächtige, unbewusste Dynamik verursachen können.

The existential themes and imagery of symbolism enabled Segantini to deal in his work with his traumatic death experiences. This lifelong, unconscious motivation force is traced on the basis of more than 60 of his paintings. By means of a historico-cultural research and psychoanalytic interpretation a soul life is made visible in pictures. With these paintings we can understand which powerful, unconscious dynamics can be caused by death experiences onrushing from outside.
