Timberglass

In a forgotten stretch of forest deep in the Colorado backcountry, the trees have stopped being trees. Their bark has turned to glass, their trunks transparent as frozen water, and inside each one stands a shape that should not be alive. When Mara Whitlock loses the trail during a solo hike, she finds herself standing among them, staring through smooth vitreous wood at faces that blink back. Some of the bodies sealed inside the trunks are decades old.
All of them are still breathing. As Mara searches for a way out of the grove, she crosses paths with Ethan Blackwell, a former park ranger who has spent years trying to convince people the forest is not what the maps say it is, and Daniel Cross, a local with a reason of his own to keep outsiders away from the glass trees. The three of them are pulled into the same question: what is keeping those people alive inside the wood, and what does the forest want in exchange for letting Mara leave.
