Theodore of Mopsuestia and the Origins of Historical Exegesis

Theodore of Mopsuestia, one of the most significant yet often overlooked figures of early Christian theology, played a crucial role in shaping the history of biblical exegesis and Christian thought. Born around 350 CE in Mopsuestia, a city in Cilicia, Theodore's life and work took place during a pivotal time in the development of Christian orthodoxy. His contributions are particularly notable in the fields of historical exegesis and Christology, and his influence can be traced through the development of theological schools, such as the Antiochene tradition, which contrasted sharply with the Alexandrian school of interpretation.
Yet, despite his considerable impact, Theodore's legacy is complex and controversial. His ideas, especially concerning the nature of Christ and the interpretation of Scripture, would eventually lead to his condemnation in the Fifth Ecumenical Council of 553, which left a mark on how his works were regarded for centuries.
