A long road trip begins as Nick seeks to find his father, who reportedly died 7 years earlier. There have been sightings of his dad since that time, all centered in Florida. Telecommunications are not what they used to be, so Nick has to make the trip blind, aided by others who want to see him achieve his goal. Nick naively assumes the factions traveling with him are helping him to be nice, but along the way he learns more about on how the new world works.
As for the other factions they all seek to find and use Max, if he is still around, for their own ends. They plan to force him to comply or watch the utter destruction of the last of his family.
