Résumé

At dawn on the Kettering road, Sabine Warrthorpe saw her husband's truck parked outside room seven of the Cottonwood Motel, and then she saw his business partner step out into the cold in his coat. She did not go in. She drove home, packed a bag and her four-year-old daughter, and left the mill her father had left her, and the man nineteen years older than her who had promised to keep it running and keep her safe. Sabine grinds heritage wheat on water-driven stone the way three generations of her family have, and she knows the miller's first law: sharp stone, dull meal; dull stone, sharp meal.
Run the stones too close and too fast to save a hard year and you scorch the very thing that feeds you. That is what Phineas did to their marriage, and no apology can un-grind it. But the wheat will not wait on a broken heart, and the flood that cracked the mill race the same season has to be rebuilt stone by stone against the current, and there is only one man in the county with the money and the guilt to do it. Told in three braided voices, Sabine's, Phineas's, and the old millwright Ugo's who watched the whole thing and will not lie about any of it, this is the story of a wrong that cannot be talked away and a man who finally understands that.
To earn a single honest morning back, Phineas gives up the partnership, the woman, the elevator, the debt he holds over her family, and the fast easy money that ruined them, and stands in the cold water rebuilding the race with his hands while she decides, on her own terms and in her own time, whether a thing ground down that far can ever run true again.
