Résumé

It was October again - a full turn of the year from the morning Delia had called at five-forty to say a bridesmaid was dead by the pond - when the state finally lifted the black bar off the name. Magnolia was married now. She had been for a month. She woke in the mornings in Cole's house at the edge of town, or Cole woke in the apartment over the bakery, the two of them still working out the geography of a shared life, and it was good, it was so good, the ordinary astonishing goodness of waking up next to a person you had chosen out loud in front of the whole world.
Biscuit had adjudicated the two households and concluded that both were acceptable provided he was permitted to sleep on the bed in each, a ruling neither human had the standing to overturn. The restitution case ground on. Harlan Tate had signed his settlement in August, admitting nothing, paying a sum that made the newspapers and would be divided among the families over the coming years. Preston was in prison and would be for a long time; he had stopped writing letters, which Magnolia understood and did not mourn.
The reservoir marker had weathered its first winter and its first summer and had become, already, one of those fixtures a town stops seeing, which was its own kind of success - the truth absorbed into the ordinary landscape, no longer a scandal, just a fact, just the history of the water, told correctly at last. And the wider investigation - the great slow unwinding of the Tate and Hadley machine - went on reaching into county after county, family after family, decade after decade, exactly as Ackerly had promised it would.
Sabrina Cole's one pulled thread was taking apart a tapestry forty years in the weaving, and it would be years more before it was fully undone, and some of it might never be. But it was coming apart. The truth was coming out. And that, Magnolia had decided long ago, was the victory, whatever else did or didn't follow.
