THE WARRIOR'S TACKY

In the spring of 1760, the richest sugar island in the British Empire catches fire. In the parish of St. Mary, a Coromantee warrior named Tacky gathers twenty-six men and women in an abandoned mill house and makes a blood oath. By dawn, two plantations are in rebel hands. By the next day, the garrison at Fort Haldane has fallen and forty muskets are in the hands of the enslaved. What follows is the largest coordinated rising Jamaica has ever seen.
As Tacky's fighters push into the hills, the colonial authorities call in the Maroons - free Black communities bound by treaty to hunt the rebels down. At the centre of the storm stands Tacky himself: a former Gold Coast leader carrying the private guilt of having once sold captives into the same ships that later carried him into slavery.
