The Waiting

The only illumination comes from a small candle. Its red-orange flame licks at the darkness creating silhouettes of light and shadow that flicker and sway around the room. The woman contemplates the dance of the shadows. She is envious of their ability to move so freely while she is required to kneel quietly. She has been kneeling for some time, though it's difficult to tell how long. There is no clock in the room and she is not allowed to wear a watch.
Still, the pain in her back and thighs tells her it's been awhile.
