Résumé

She Came to Say Goodbye. She Stayed to Begin Again. Six years after her partner Thomas died in a fall from the Eiffel Tower's south pillar, Claire returns to Paris. She tells herself it's for a travel piece, but really she's answering a voice she heard at 3 a.m. in Lyon - a voice with Thomas's cadence telling her to _go back_. The tower is unchanged. The ache in her ribs isn't. On her first nights back, Claire sits on the same bench where she waited for him years ago.
The voice returns, clearer this time: _"I love you and I want you to be happy again."_ It's not a haunting. It's permission. At the tower, she meets Luc, a quiet man in his 40s who comes there when he can't sleep. His sister died young, and he knows what it's like to think that moving forward is betrayal. He doesn't try to fix her. He just sits beside her, shares tea, listens. Through their conversations and the space the tower gives her, Claire realizes she's been holding Thomas by holding onto the pain.
Leaving the ache behind doesn't mean leaving him behind. On her final night, she leaves a smooth stone under the south pillar and walks away without looking back. The memory of Thomas no longer pulls her down. It stays there, so she doesn't have to carry it anymore. As she leaves the tower, Luc is waiting. For the first time in six years, Claire lets herself take someone's hand and move forward.
