Résumé

Lauren Anderson knows exactly how to manage a crisis. She can calm a hostile room, fix a collapsing narrative, and make bad decisions sound temporary in heels that hurt. What she cannot seem to do is date without turning it into a polished, emotionally exhausting performance. Ryan Thompson makes a living helping other people end their marriages with as much dignity as possible. He is steady, observant, and far too good at spotting the damage people hide behind good manners.
Which is precisely why he should not be Lauren's type. Unfortunately, an AI-powered dating concierge disagrees. After one unexpectedly sharp first date, Lauren and Ryan are forced back into each other's orbit when their best friends get engaged and draft them into wedding planning. Suddenly they are surviving vendor disasters, seating-chart emergencies, family landmines, and one very aggressive bridal timeline while their intrusive dating apps keep offering humiliatingly accurate commentary on the chemistry neither of them wants to admit is real.
Lauren prefers control to vulnerability. Ryan is so used to making himself easy to love that he rarely asks for what he actually wants. Falling for each other would be reckless enough without algorithms, wedding stress, and a growing stack of evidence that they might be exactly what the other person needs. But love gets messy fast when two people are better at managing feelings than living them. Witty, warm, and sharply contemporary, The Version of You I Was Promised is a romantic comedy about bad timing, good banter, emotional self-sabotage, and what happens when the software gets the match right before the humans are ready.
