In the closing days of Briar's life, she tells the story of her life to her only living relative, her grandson, Russell. A history of Russell's family is told, which he never saw coming. These revelations recount the poverty of Briar's family when they were young.
The criticism she faced as being a Tom Boy. The hardships of the Great Depression, an approaching war, a rough life growing up on a farm, and family tragedies all encompass the life of Briar.
