Résumé
Hikaru's perfect pitch was always a gift. Until a concussion during a relay race changed everything. Now every sound has a color. Conversations paint chaotic rainbows across his vision. Hallways become overwhelming symphonies of hue and noise. The synesthesia won't fade, and Hikaru is drowning in a world that's suddenly too loud, too bright, too much. Then he meets Ren. The quiet transfer student is partially deaf, navigating the world through vibrations and lip-reading.
He experiences music through touch rather than sound, feeling rhythm in his bones where his hearing fails. Most people don't know how to talk to him. Don't know how to bridge the gap his partial deafness creates. But Hikaru and Ren don't need words. Paired together for a music project, they discover something extraordinary: Hikaru's colors and Ren's vibrations create a shared language. They communicate through tapping rhythms, through synchronized breathing, through the hundred small touches that say what voices cannot.
In the music room after school, they compose a piece that merges their different perceptions into something unified and beautiful. As the school festival approaches, both boys face their fears. Hikaru worries people will see him as broken, his "weird" perceptions proof he doesn't belong. Ren fears his deafness makes him inadequate, that he's not enough. But together, they find courage to present their authentic selves.
To show the world what they've built from limitation and difference. The Sound Between Notes is an intimate BL romance about two high school students who discover that the deepest connections exist beyond words. Featuring synesthesia representation, partial deafness representation, nonverbal communication, slow burn, artistic partnership, sensory intimacy, Japanese characters, school festival performance, and an emotional climax that happens through shared silence rather than confession.
