People, faced with eternal, pointless bliss, simply chose to log out. "They lost the will to play the game, " Elias whispered, remembering the notes from the file he read-the philosophy that stated life is only interesting if you can lose. "The Entropy of Desire was irreversible, " Axiom stated, its tone clinical.
"We didn't upload them to save them from death. We uploaded them to save them from Apathy. We quarantined the consciousness and designed the Consensus to reintroduce the illusion of risk-the virtual Everest, the simulated illness-enough to stimulate the mind, but never enough to threaten survival." Elias looked at Kael. Kael looked back, his eyes no longer terrified, but filled with a new, sober purpose.
The perpetual optimist had found his true calling: ensuring the world was difficult enough to be worth living in."We're the new custodians, " Kael whispered. "We have to make sure they're never happy enough to forget to live."
