Résumé

In The Real Meaning of Life, Patrick Devlan, a twenty-seven-year-old man who has written and published a number of murder mysteries, becomes entangled in a real-life murder mystery. Neurotic, unstable, and somewhat chauvinistic, Patrick skitters around on the edge of events as Nick, his roommate and best friend, is arrested and convicted of murdering his girlfriend. But it isn't really clear who murdered her, and when Nick is sentenced to death, Patrick's world begins to fall apart, and he is faced with an agonizing choice that will affect the rest of his life.
In the end, however, despite all his evasions, pretensions, and politically incorrect jokes, Patrick is led to the discovery of what is actually, all joking aside, the real meaning of life. There are many who will call Patrick, from beginning to end, a despicable person who deserves no respect, but perhaps you should read his side of the story so that you can judge for yourself what kind of person he really is.
Although it doesn't always happen, people can sometimes change for the better when they're faced with overwhelming adversity. But then, in other situations, it's just too late to repair the damage, and it doesn't matter what you say or do anymore. So what is the real meaning of life? It's an interesting question, isn't it? What would you say if someone asked you that question? Seriously! For some, it takes a tragedy to discover an authentic answer to a question like that.
Luckily, Patrick is an expert on tragedy-in fact, because of his words, deeds, and attitudes, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that he's the king of tragedy.
