Résumé

Corliss Vandenhoek-Bree has built a quiet life in Ashcroft, Oregon: a rented house on Cyprus Street, bookkeeping work, substitute teaching, an aging dog, and an eighteen-year-old daughter preparing to leave home. Then a woman moves into the rental across the street. Wendy Thorne-Oster arrives alone, carrying her own boxes from a yellow rental truck into a small house that has stood empty for months.
At first, she is only a new neighbor. Then Corliss notices the handwriting, the pauses, the careful questions, and finally the eyes. Wendy is not in Ashcroft by accident. She is Shilo's biological mother. As Corliss pieces together why Wendy has come and what she wants, she must decide how to tell the daughter she has raised since infancy that another mother has been watching from across the street.
What follows is not a fight for possession, but a quieter and more difficult question: how much love can one family make room for without losing itself? The Quiet Mother is a tender literary domestic drama about adoption, truth, restraint, and the kind of motherhood that chooses the child first.
