One synonym for pawn is hock. Hock comes from a Dutch word, hok, which is defined as prison or debt. Another definition of a pawn is a person used to advance another's purposes. We think of a pawn broker as a person who is authorized to pay out money against personal property left with him. More often than not, the property is never redeemed and is later sold to recoup the broker's investment and make a little profit on the deal.
