Résumé

A classic ghost story illustrated by acclaimed cartoonist, Seth. Retired officer Colonel Mortimer takes a lease on Brentwood, a mansion in Scotland that shares grounds with the ruins of an older house - including a strange, vacant doorway. When his son falls ill and eerie events begin to unfold, Mortimer must face his fears in order to save his son.
Margaret Oliphant (1828-97) was born in Wallyford, near Edinburgh. Her first novel, Passages in the Life of Margaret Maitland (1849), achieved some success and was followed two years later with further novels. She began contributing to magazines including Blackwoods, for whom she was to write hundreds of short stories, essays, articles and serialised novels such as Katie Stewart (1853). Some of Oliphant's most powerful stories are her supernatural tales, compiled in A Beleaguered City and Other Tales of the Seen and Unseen (1885). Seth's comic book series, Palookaville, has been collected into It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken and Clyde Fans.
He is an illustrator for The New Yorker and the designer of best-selling The Complete Peanuts. His humorous graphic novel about the obsession for comic-book collecting, Wimbledon Green, was published by Cape in 2006.
