The protagonist, Joseph Rouletabille, is a reporter and amateur sleuth who is sent to investigate the case. He meets and interrogates various characters, including the police detective Frédéric Larsan. More attempts are made on the victim's life, and the perpetrator appears to vanish on multiple occasions.
