Résumé
Gaston Leroux's The Mystery of the Yellow Room (1907) is one of the earliest and most celebrated locked-room mysteries, a cornerstone of classic detective fiction. Introducing the brilliant young journalist-detective Joseph Rouletabille, the novel sets the stage for a seemingly impossible crime: an attempted murder inside a locked and bolted room, from which no attacker could possibly have escaped.
The victim, Mathilde Stangerson, is found gravely injured in the Yellow Room of her father's château.
Despite the room being locked from the inside, with no secret passages or apparent means of exit, evidence suggests that an assailant was present. How could such a crime occur? And who could possess both the motive and the opportunity to carry it out? Rouletabille, with his keen intellect and unconventional methods, takes on the challenge, often outsmarting seasoned investigators. His pursuit of the truth unravels layers of deception, hidden passions, and shocking revelations that push the boundaries of logic and deduction. Renowned for its ingenious plotting, taut suspense, and masterful resolution, The Mystery of the Yellow Room stands as a defining work in the detective genre.
This illustrated edition highlights the atmosphere of suspense and the puzzle-like quality of the case, offering readers a chance to experience Leroux's masterpiece in a visually enriched form. A thrilling blend of mystery, logic, and imagination, it remains an essential read for lovers of classic detective stories and fans of intellectual puzzles.
