The question of the nature of the Muscovite town takes on greater importance than may seem at first glance. Beyond the superficial description of the urban centre, of the nature of townsmen and town administration, lies the controversial question of economic development. What stage of economic development had the Russian town reached on the evolutionary Marxist ladder? In a state that purports to be Communist, the question cannot be ignored.
