This novel began with a single image: a woman washing a stranger who is not a stranger, and seeing on his shoulder a mark she has carried in her memory for twenty years without knowing she carried it. Every family has a sealed room. Every sealed room has a door. What lives behind the door is, almost always, more human than the sealing suggested - more complicated, more costly, more capable of redemption and of damage in equal measure.
The records in this story - the notarial documents, the engineering notebooks, the letter in the cabinet, the cavity in the wall - are fictional. But the impulse that produced them is not. People hide things when they cannot speak them. They hide them carefully, in places that will last, in the hope that the right person will eventually arrive and know what they are looking at.
