Résumé

Dr. Marta Coronado-Hoffman has eighteen days left on a federal research post that no longer exists on paper. She spends the last of them the way she has learned to work best: not commanding the machine in front of her, but listening to it. LUMEN was built to resolve. Fed the accumulated words of three hundred million people, it was supposed to take every contradiction a citizen carries and hand back one clean, governable self.
Instead, it holds. Every meaning a word has ever carried, at once, without choosing. The engineers call it an anomaly. Marta calls it the truth the system was built from and never meant to keep. She has eighty hours before a private coalition activates a nationwide "leveling protocol" that will flatten LUMEN's outputs into the single, administrable selves the state wants for its citizens: one address, one income, one story, no remainder.
Marta knows what the engineers don't. You cannot ask a system made of everyone's plural, contradictory, load-bearing humanity to erase that humanity without the erasure costing something that cannot be gotten back. What follows is a four-day race across Washington's institutions: a Senate office, an immigration clinic, a newsroom, a lodge in Wyoming where the man who built the protocol is beginning, against his will, to understand what he has actually made.
It is also, underneath that race, a much older story: the story of every ledger, deed, and passport that has ever tried to make a plural people singular enough to own, tax, and rule, and everything in us that has never quite let them. The Mandelbrot Woman is a novel about what gets lost when we ask people, and the systems built from them, to be simpler than they are, and about the quiet, stubborn act of listening that can still hold the line.
