Munyaka is fourteen and orphaned, raised by an aunt and uncle in rural Kenya who treat him as unpaid labor rather than family. When a football injury and a threat to end his schooling collide, he begins to understand that nothing in his uncle's household is waiting for him. Three years later, at seventeen, he finally walks fifty kilometers to Nairobi with a schoolbag, a stubborn kind of hope, and one and a half shillings.
The city does not welcome him. He falls in with a street gang run by a boy named Ras, learns to pickpocket to survive, and watches a fellow "hunter" beaten to death by a mob for the crime of being caught. Unwilling to become the crowd that killed his friend, Munyaka leaves Ras's gang and drifts through years of begging and scavenging with a street crew called the Blessed Ones. A chance errand - buying sodas with Ras's money - leaves him holding a lottery ticket handed over as spare change by an irritated shopkeeper.
Ras throws the ticket into a fire in disgust. Munyaka quietly fishes it back out anyway. Months later, sorting through a dumpsite for clean clothes to wear home in shame-driven defeat, he finds the ticket again - and discovers it has won two hundred thousand shillings. With the help of a patient local chief, Munyaka claims the money, rents an apartment, and gives virtually all of it away to the friends and strangers who once shared his hunger.
Within months he is broke and back on the street, having learned nothing except how much faster money leaves than it arrives. A second ticket wins five hundred thousand shillings. This time a bank officer teaches him real financial discipline - savings, a fixed deposit, a debit card instead of a fistful of cash - and Munyaka manages the windfall with new caution. Then a third ticket wins a million shillings, and his luck becomes public legend: rumors of witchcraft, ancestral blessing, divine favor.
Ras resurfaces, no longer a rival gang leader but a man who has moved into armed robbery, and forces Munyaka to buy one more ticket "for the both of them." Not long after, Ras returns with an American named Jones, who offers Munyaka a sponsorship: school, opportunity, a passport to the America he has dreamed of since a torn photograph of New York first found him as a boy. The offer is a trap.
