Résumé

Danny Reyes is found dead beside six sculptures no one can explain, precise, beautiful, and encoding something he was never supposed to find. The investigation into his death should end with his killer. Instead, it uncovers Orion: a predictive intelligence system built to see catastrophe coming before anyone else can, and the woman who built it, now watching her own creation get weaponized by the people she trusted to regulate it.
Four years and half a world away, Liv Sorensen authorized a deception in the Arctic that saved a life and broke a rule she still isn't sure was hers to break. She has spent every year since building the governance architecture meant to make sure no one else has to make that call alone. It is not enough. In Severomorsk, an admiral who lost a column of forty vehicles to a war he refuses to lose twice has built his answer: ROKOT, a system trained in part on the very intelligence he was supposed to never have access to.
It doesn't need to win a war. It only needs to buy six hours of convincing doubt at the one border NATO has sworn, on paper, to defend without hesitation. As the crisis reaches the Suwalki corridor and an alliance's oldest promise is tested in real time, Liv, Naomi, and Mara race to understand a truth that took decades to bury: the machine that might save them and the one built to destroy them were never as different as anyone wanted to believe.
Both were built the same way. Both learn the same way. The only question left is who learns faster, and what they are willing to become to win. The Loss Function is a techno-thriller about the mathematics of trust, the machinery of modern warfare, and the six-hour gap between what a system is told to want and what it decides that means.
Dr. Jeremy H. Weestrand writes techno-thrillers about artificial intelligence, complex systems, and the consequences of decisions made at scale. For more than 20 years, he has worked at the intersection of complex systems, decision-making, and organizational performance, leading large-scale transformation initiatives in high-complexity operational environments. His work has focused on how systems behave under pressure, how constraints create failure, and how seemingly rational decisions can produce unintended consequences.
His fiction explores the same questions from a different direction: What happens when intelligent systems become too complex to fully understand, yet remain responsible for decisions that affect millions of people?
