The Last Meridian

When the first reports of a strange outbreak begin to appear, Marcus Hale tries to treat them like every other distant crisis: troubling, serious, but still part of a world that will continue as it always has. He is a history teacher, a man used to studying catastrophe from the safe distance of books, records, and hindsight. But when hospitals begin to fail, the radio turns grim, and the dead start moving with violent purpose, Marcus finds himself pulled out of theory and into the kind of history no one survives unchanged.
Leaving behind the remains of his ordinary life, Marcus joins a small group of neighbors and strangers on the road west, heading toward his mother's farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania. There, amid dark fields, dwindling supplies, fading broadcasts, and the constant threat beyond the fence line, the survivors begin the brutal work of staying alive. Food must be counted. Watches must be kept. Trust must be earned.
Grief must be carried quietly, because every person still breathing has work to do. As winter closes in and the old world disappears behind them, the farmhouse becomes more than shelter. It becomes a fragile beginning. Marcus, Rachel, Carl, Eleanor, the Hendersons, and the others must learn what civilization truly means when governments fall silent, roads become dangerous, and survival depends not on heroics, but on cooperation, memory, sacrifice, and the stubborn refusal to become less human in an inhuman world.
